Project Trust advise volunteers to start secondary projects in their schools and/or communities. I started and got involved with a number of secondary projects, information, updates and photos of which can be found below.
Projects:
Project Trust Information Board
Time Capsule
World Map Mural
School Name Painting
Staff Benab
Project Trust Information Board
Status: done!
Sand Creek Secondary is a brand new school, and as such the students have never met PT volunteers before. The board I set up gives information on the charity, on their operations without Guyana, and on the incumbent PTVs (i.e. Harry and I).
PHOTO COMING SOON
4th January 2013 – Board completed.
Time Capsule
Status: my involvement finished
As mentioned above Sand Creek Secondary is a brand new school, so I decided that a time capsule would be a good way to capture a piece of history, and at the same time provide a way for students to feel that they are a part of their school.
3rd May 2013 – The project was officially launched, and I have started to collect items from students. The capsule will be sealed on 28th June, and buried a few days later.
5th July 2013 – The time capsule currently has over 50 items submitted, however it will not be sealed by me. I have decided to hand the project over to another member of staff – Miss Abby – who is staying in Sand Creek after the holiday starts. This way, she can add items from the school’s first annual pageant, as well as a few other things.
World Map Mural
Status: done!
During the Easter term I will be painting a large mural of a world map, including distances between Guyana and major world cities.
The “go-ahead” has been given by the headmaster and a site for the mural has been chosen. The next steps are to produce the stencils, acquire the necessary paint and then actually get started.
1st February 2013 – Outline finished
20th February 2013 – Country painting finished
22nd March 2013 – Finished!
School Name Painting
Status: done!
After completing the world map (see above), I was asked by our HM to paint the school’s full name (“Sand Creek Secondary School”) across a 75 food wide wall. Daunting task indeed!
16th April 2013 – Drawing outline of letters started
30th April 2013 – Drawing outline of letters finished
22nd June 2013 – Paint finally arrives in Sand Creek
23rd June 2013 – Painting started
28th June 2013 – Painting finished (have a look here)
Staff Benab
Status: partially completed
This project is exactly what it says on the tin – we want to build a staff benab. For those who don’t know, this is a benab:
7th January 2013 – I raised the idea with teachers of “hey, we could build a staff benab next to the teachers’ quarters!”
11th January 2013 – Idea raised for a 20ft benab at PTFA meeting and approved by all. Plans have been made to go into the rainforest for an overnight trip on the 23rd/24th of this month to cut down the necessary materials.
24th January 2013 – Jungle visit!
27th April 2013 – Some of the benab wood has been moved 100 yards closer to our apartment.
29th June 2013 – We worked hard all day, but sadly the benab was not finished before we left Sand Creek. Hopefully the next set of PTVs will pick up where we left off.
