Having completed the outline of the world map at the start of the month, I’ve spent the last week and a bit painting all of the individual countries and it’s starting to come together. As you can see in the photos below I’ve used 4 different colours: they don’t signify anything specific, they’re just so that no two countries side-by-side have the same colour. The next step will be buying blue paint for the oceans and labelling all of the Caricom countries (as well as a few other key places like the UK, America, etc). Read more

Class Outing
This week is MASH week, which is short for Mashramani, which this year is all about “embracing culture, reflecting diversity”. Essentially it means a week of activities and events instead of actual school work. Today (Tuesday) was a class outing day. Whilst my PT partner Harry was dragging his 8B class up a mountain, Miss Abby and I took our 8A class to a sand bank on the Rupununi River, about an hour’s walk north of the village. Once there we spent the day swimming in the river, sunbathing on the sand, cooking freshly caught fish, playing volleyball, liming in hammocks, etc. It was a pretty epic day! Photos: Read more
TG#39 – Lime
“Liming” is a Guyanese passtime that I’ve gotten very good at. To lime more or less means to sit about, relax and not do much. Someone (I forget who) once told me that if you achieve anything, then you’re not liming properly.
As I said, I’ve gotten very good at liming, so I’ve completed this part of the guide many many times, but I think my best liming session so far has been in my hammock (of course), strung about 6 foot in the air between two trees on a sand bank of the Rupununi river:
TG#10 – Build a Sand Castle
Today was spent at the river with my class (read the blog post here), and I found time in the midst of my busy schedule of relaxing in a hammock and swimming in the river to construct (with help) a large sand-castle-based smiley face:
TG#30 – Sing
Done…
Actually, the photo above it just one event of Karaoke in Georgetown. The people who live with me here know that I also sing when I get up in the morning… in the shower… while I’m doing my paperwork… while I’m teaching lessons (no, really)… whenever I go out for a walk… I sing quite a lot here!
TG#18 – Tell Someone That the Sun Made My Hair Go Ginger
This has actually become a running joke between myself, Harry, Miss Sammy and Miss Abby, so I’ve ticked this off countless times over the last 5-and-a-bit months.
We Got The Power!
Tonight, for the first time ever, there is electricity in the teachers’ quarters of Sand Creek Secondary School! Engineers have been working here for the last couple of weeks (see this post), and tonight the switch was finally flipped to send power to our quarters. Harry and I were thrilled to finally have power (mostly so we can use the lights and don’t have to stop everything after sunset!), and decided to celebrate by borrowing a laptop, cooking up some popcorn and watching The Mechanic.
TG#11 – Build a Campfire and Cook Something With it
I actually forgot that I managed to complete this one of after I’d been here only a few weeks…
We’re Finally Cooking!
As of Thursday last week, Harry and I have finally started coooking for ourselves! The delay has been down to the troubles in getting the local Department of Education to actually deliver the cooking gas bottle they keep promising, but it arrived last week, and we’ve been cooking all of our meals ever since.
